NAME?
Gareth Michael Sanders
OCCUPATION IN BMX? Mutiny Bikes owner and jack of all trades.
SO WHATS YOUR AFFILIATION WITH THE SHOE INDUSTRY? None whatsoever.
WHAT SHOES ARE YOU GONNA WEAR TODAY? My new Etnies Brixton's. Thanks Povah!
WHY THEM? I try support companies that I feel are doing things right, this is not just in BMX but through my life. I think Etnies have one of the best BMX progammes going; they support a huge pro team and world flow team, they have the STI lab which looks to be a great facility for developing footwear for action sports and the whole company is very environmentally aware.
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT NIKE IN BMX? I'm not a huge fan. They do however pay a team of bike riders and run print ads in BMX magazines which generates much needed revenue for the BMX print magazines.
HOW DO YOU FEEL ETHICALLY ABOUT NIKE? For the record there is many companies in different industries that are as bad as Nike. This website is a pretty interesting read: thirdworldtraveler.com
DO YOU BELIEVE THERE IS A PLACE FOR MULTI NATIONAL BILLION DOLLAR COMPANIES IN BMX? Our industry is so small, when any big company makes a move in to BMX I think it can be scary.
WHY? Like anything both parties need to benefit out of the deal. With a huge company like Nike getting involved it can make a big difference to BMX. I don't think Nike are doing a bad job in BMX but to me the progamme is not very interesting. I see Companies like Redbull and Levi's who I think are doing a great job in BMX and doing some really cool things.
WHAT COULD NIKE AND COMPANIES DO TO MAKE YOU BUY THEM? Not a lot! I'm pretty set in my ways.
ANY LAST WORDS YOU WANT PEOPLE TO HEAR ON THE SUBJECT? Think about your responsibility as a consumer with everything you buy. If more people looked into what they were buying into then the world could be a even better place.
